Feb. 12th Keynote Speeches

Scott Simmons COO Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)

Mr. Scott Simmons is the COO of the Open Geospatial Consortium, or OGC. As the Chair of the 3D Information Management Domain Working Group at OGC, he holds a leading role in the standardization of KML and CityGML, the de facto standard for 3D city models. Currently, the group sets its focus on managing, combining, and spreading data lifecycles. Today, Mr. Simmons will speak about the story behind the standardization of the CityGML and KML formats which he has led, as well as the format’s uses, and the future of the nature of urban information.

Scott Simmons COO Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)

Dr. Thomas H. Kolbe Professor, Chair for Geoinformatics, Technical University of Munich

A global authority on virtual 3D city and landscape models, urban systems modeling, smart cities, 3D geodatabases, 3D geographic information systems, GIS and simulation, and indoor navigation, Professor Kolbe is the founder of CityGML, the international standard for 3D city and landscape models. Dr. Kolbe will speak about future directions in developing urban data and their prospects.

Dr. Thomas H. Kolbe Professor, Chair for Geoinformatics, Technical University of Munich

Helsinki 3D+ Project Team, City of Helsinki

  • Jarmo Suomisto Project Manager
  • Kari Kaisla Project Manager
  • Enni Airaksinen City Model Specialis

Since the late 1980s, the City of Helsinki has been openly publishing its urban data. Today, all data assets of the city's infrastructure are interlinked based on CityGML, the industry standard format. This can assist in urban planning, track carbon emissions, analyze the impact of energy use and transport, and help insurance companies in accurately quantifying building size and their inherent risks. Helsinki works closely with other cities such as Rotterdam, Hamburg, Vienna, and Singapore, and is now recognized as an international leader in the field. The Helsinki 3D+ team will speak on methods to accumulate 3D urban data and its significance.

Minoru Mochihara Urban Planning Division, City of Kitakyushu

In Kitakyushu, where the population has been in decline for several decades, a location optimization plan was formulated last year as a city planning master plan. i-Urban Revitalization is being used in consensus-building and designing a safe, secure, compact city. Currently, Kitakyushu City is reassessing its classification of urbanized areas, using i-Urban Revitalization in discussions. Mr. Mochihara will present the current state in efforts to realize compact cities through urban policy – and opportunities to use visualization in these cases.

Minoru Mochihara Urban Planning Division, City of Kitakyushu

Yuya Miyasaka Urban Planning Division, City of Chino

Chino City is actively utilizing i-Urban Revitalization in urban planning, revitalizing station plazas, and road improvements. Mr. Miyasaka, who leads these initiatives, has completed advanced trainings and received certifications in visualization. He applies this background by utilizing i-UR on-site. Mr. Miyasaka will speak about the future prospects and applications in Chino City, a pioneering example in i-UR.

Yuya Miyasaka Urban Planning Division, City of Chino

Dr. Kentaro Akahoshi Director, Office for Promotion of Regional Revitalization, Cabinet Office of Japan Specialist Planning Officer, MLIT

From his experience in promoting i-Urban Revitalization, both with the Cabinet Office as well as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Dr. Akahoshi will introduce the latest information on the background and purpose of "urban structure visualization" and "i-Urban Revitalization", as well as initiatives concerning utilization and dissemination.

Dr. Kentaro Akahoshi Director, Office for Promotion of Regional Revitalization, Cabinet Office of Japan Specialist Planning Officer, MLIT
